The Obidala Playlist

I was talking to a couple of my friends today and the subject of the Obidala playlist came up, in that I was listening to it while we were RPing at naboosenator. (For what it's worth, this is also what I listen to when I work on To Ignite the Stars.) They begged me to post the contents of said playlist and the reason for each song's inclusion in my journal, which I will now proceed to do. Mostly because Katie is ceaselessly bugging me to do so over AIM. XD

Each song comes with a link to its lyrics, so if you're curious, give it a click. Posting all the lyrics on here would've resulted in a fiendishly long entry, so you'll have to be content with that. Also, I've included the point of view of each song and how I feel it applies to Obidala, Obi-Wan, Padmé or Anakin.

1. Let It Rain - Amanda Marshall (Padmé)
From Padmé's point of view. The lyrics make it pretty clear, I think. I envision it particularly applying to To Ignite the Stars, really, given how her parents refused to allow her to write to Obi-Wan and the fact that her love for him persists despite all their attempts to stamp it out of her. Plus the fact that she's so dedicated to her career and can't see herself in a relationship anyway.

2. Right Here All Along - Amanda Marshall (Padmé, Obidala)
Sometimes, we can't see what's right in front of our faces. Padmé keeps searching for the perfect partner, only to realize that he has been - hence the song title - right there all along.

3. Take A Chance On Me - ABBA (Obi-Wan, Obidala)
This one is more included for humourous purposes than anything else. One day when Katie and I were feeling silly we came up with the idea (for a naboosenator roleplay) of Obi-Wan doing a striptease for Padmé because she's feeling depressed. Then they wind up having madhawtsex on the floor of her Varykino living room. We were talking about what song he would strip to, and decided Take A Chance On Me would be most appropriate. To this day I still can't hear that song without randomly bursting into giggles. (Made for a bit of an awkward situation when my cousin put together a tribute slide show for my aunt and uncle's 40th wedding anniversary and included that song. During the period in the slide where it was playing my family kept glancing over and asking me what on earth I was sniggering at. XD)

4. ... And Then I Kissed Him - Pearl Harbor soundtrack (Obidala)
No link, because it's an instrumental piece. This, I believe, is the best bit of music to listen to while writing sex scenes. Particularly Obidala sex scenes. Don't ask me why, it just seems so passionate and tender and gentle, exactly the way I picture them loving each other. It's major inspiration for the scene after Geonosis in To Ignite the Stars.

5. Fall From Grace - Amanda Marshall (Padmé, Obidala)
There seems to be a lot of Amanda Marshall on this playlist, which I didn't really notice until I started writing it down. o___o I guess that's because she's one of my favourite singers, and her songs are always full of meaning for life's different situations. This, from Padmé's point of view, explores how Obi-Wan makes her feel.

6. My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (Padmé)
A number of different perspectives can be examined with this song (besides the one that it sucks donkey balls -- and if that's the one you want to take, far be it from me to criticize your opinion), some of which are from an Ani/Padmé standpoint. When I first put it on the playlist that's how I thought of it, that Padmé had been in love with Anakin and that, assuming she lived through the whole Force-choking thing, she would have to find some way to move on after what's essentially his death. I still believe that could be the case, but I also think of it as it applies to my fic, and to her needing to move on after her parents forbid her to write to Obi-Wan. Take from that what you will.

7. Angel - Sarah McLachlan (Padmé, Obi-Wan)
And lo, we come to the first of those songs on the playlist that I can neither discuss nor analyze because spoilers for To Ignite the Stars are involved. Suffice to say, this song does have a spot on here and I will come back to it and give my thoughts once the pertinent fic chapter is out of the way. ^_^

8. Don't Let Go - Bryan Adams (Padmé, Obi-Wan)
And lo, we come to the second of those songs - okay, you get the picture. Again, spoilers for TIS are a danger here, so mum's the word for now. I will say that this was the first song to make it onto the playlist. It fits them perfectly. ^_^

9. Because You Loved Me - Celine Dion (Padmé, Obidala)
Okay, this one we can discuss. Sort of. Basically it outlines Padmé's feelings for Obi-Wan and how he has helped support her so much. It's as simple, and as complicated, as that. Just read the lyrics and I think you'll understand.

10. Why Don't You Love Me? - Amanda Marshall (Anakin, Obidala)
Here we have Anakin entering the equation for the first time. This song captures how he might feel realizing that Padmé and Obi-Wan have something he and Padmé don't, not to mention some of the thoughts that might go through his head being on the outside looking in. (Besides "OMG!ANGST!WOE".) It really fits.

11. The Winner Takes It All - ABBA (Obi-Wan, Padmé, Anakin, Obidala)
Originally this was supposed to have applied to TIS and Obi-Wan's feelings upon learning -- and yes, he was going to learn -- of Padmé's engagement to Anakin after Geonosis, and some of what he might experience. Since she isn't going to marry Anakin anymore, that'll be somewhat skewed, but I would still love to write a fic in which that side of Obi-Wan comes to the forefront. I may just do that once my paws aren't so full of other stuff. It may still end up applying to TIS, but in what capacity I don't yet know.

12. Fields of Gold - Sting (Obidala)
Pure, unadulterated Obidala fluff. That characterizes this song to a tee.

13. Wild Child - Enya (Obidala)
Ideally, and I place heavy emphasis on the word ideally, this is what Padmé would walk down the aisle to during her wedding to Obi-Wan. And alas, at least as far as TIS is concerned, that's all I can say on the subject.

14. Bring Me To Life - Evanescence (Padmé, Obidala)
Hardly needs any introduction if you've read Chapter 6 of TIS. This is the song I listened to while writing the latter part of that chapter, and it portrays Padmé's feelings at the end of said chapter quite aptly.

15. Out of Bounds - Amanda Marshall (Obidala)
The - and I do mean THE - consummate Obidala song, in my opinion. The songfic I wrote based on it won a Best Songfic award at the Obidala Fan Forum, and with good reason. It ... just ... fits. The lyrics, the emotions involved, the situation, it's all completely what Padmé and Obi-Wan would feel in such a situation, particularly Obi-Wan. To this day I have yet to see its equal in relevance to the Obidala ship.

16. There You'll Be - Faith Hill (Padmé, Obi-Wan, Anakin)
This, like Because You Loved Me and My Heart Will Go On, could apply to both a number of different situations and to Padmé's feelings for Obi-Wan and Anakin. Supposing for a start that she didn't kick the bucket at Polis Massa, it could be her reflecting on the life she had with Anakin and the new one she may be about to start with Obi-Wan. It was a major reference point when I was doing the After the Fall scenes at naboosenator.

17. I'm Gonna Getcha Good - Shania Twain (Obidala)
Another silly little song that Katie and I bandied about when we talked about Padmé possibly doing a striptease for Obi-Wan to repay the favour. This is the one we had her doing it to.

18. If You Asked Me To - Celine Dion (Obidala)
Another "After" song, where Padmé is hesitant to begin a relationship with Obi-Wan because of her prior feelings for Anakin and what happened to him. It's the "once burned, twice shy" principle.

19. Love Can Move Mountains - Celine Dion (Obidala)
Because it can. And for Padmé and Obi-Wan in TIS, it will.

20. Amazing Life - Jem (Obidala)
Another of those madhawtsex songs, but only because a) it plays in Six Feet Under when Claire and Billy are having sex and b) Andrew and I like to play it when we're getting it on. So, unsurprisingly it's the second song I choose for passionate encounters.

21. A Case of You - k.d. lang (Padmé, Anakin)
This is much more of an Ani/Padmé song, but it's on the Obidala playlist because it represents a loss of love between the two. When exactly did said loss of love start, why, and what will Padmé do now are just a few of the ways I feel it applies here.

22. I'm Still Standing - Elton John (Obi-Wan, Anakin, Obidala)
This would be Obi-Wan thumbing his nose at Anakin and saying, "Look mate, despite the fact that we were very close and you then tried to kill me, I'm moving on with my life. I'm going for my love, who has always been Padmé, and you aren't on my mind. So bugger off why don't you." Not in those words, but you get the drift. XD

23. Hallelujah - k.d. lang (Padmé, Obi-Wan, Anakin)
Another song I consulted heavily while writing After the Fall for naboosenator. Very angsty and dark, but captures a lot of what Padmé and Obi-Wan would have been going through after Anakin's fall to the dark side.

24. Porcelain - Moby (Obidala)
Mainly instrumental again, so no link. I'm not sure why this song is on there other than that I really, really, really like it. It's very calming and I guess could represent Obi-Wan's calming influence on Padmé, and hers on him.

25. Blessed - Elton John (Obi-Wan)
This song portrays how Obi-Wan really wants a child, which is an opportunity denied to him since he's a Jedi. It may or may not happen in TIS. *whistles innocently* *remembers she can't whistle* *hums instead*

So there you have it. Songs to be added and deleted depending on what music I add to my computer. I didn't realize how long this would take to put together!
