Writing - Writer At Heart

Word Wars

All you writers out there, if you're ever looking for an easy way to pile up some words on a fic you're writing, do a Word War. Here's how it works.

1. You get together with another writer (it's preferable if there are two or three of you, but even one person can do this on their own) over instant messenger or phone.

2. You set a time to begin and a time to end. It works best if said time is a round number (like :20). Word wars can last for five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen minutes, whatever you like just so long as it's a round number.

3. When the start time arrives, GO. Don't think about what you're writing, don't correct for spelling or grammar, just go with it. Write until the end time arrives.

4. When the end time arrives, stop. Do a word count and see how many words you've managed to crank out. You'll probably be surprised!

5. Repeat as many times as desired!

I was just introduced to the concept of Word Wars tonight by a bunch of writerly friends, and I can't believe how much progress I've made on To Ignite the Stars as a result. I'm almost halfway through Chapter 9, having written well over 2,000 words. This is absolutely unprecedented.

I may even have Chapter 9 finished by Saturday!

So yes, Word Wars work! Try them and be amazed!
